It has always been a struggle for me to keep my hair soft and healthy after being in the ocean so much. I have tried a tons of products, and at home mask. So I thought it would be great to do a post on my favorite hair care products and tips for other ocean loving, beach babes. I am in love with everything Wildfox owner & designer Kimberly Gordon creates. Whether it's her vision for amazing photos, her lovely artwork, her blog or her amazing clothing line. I am obsessed with her aesthetic . I have included these beautiful photos from her recent lookbook The Wildfox Lagoon shot by Mark Hunter because they are the perfect fit for a post on Mermaid Hair.
When my hair is curly from a day in the ocean I never brush it. The sea salt gives my hair volume and shape but can make it difficult to brush through which can lead to breaking. Never brush you hair with a regular brush when it is wet. You should use a wide tooth comb to get tangles out because you hair is very fragile when wet.
I first started using Davines after I had self dyed my hair lavender (well it turned out more pink), and then tried to go brown after, which didn't really work and left my hair very damaged, brittle and dry. I finally gave in and went to my friend Tracy to get back to my natural blonde (she's the best for blonde in Wilmington NC). Ofcourse Tracy transformed my grey/brown/purplelypink mess of a head back to an amazing natural bright blonde but during the process she requested that I cut my past shoulder length hair into a long bob. What? Ofcourse not! I can't do that I have wavy hair, and NO WAY will I look okay with short hair ( I had been scarred from when my mom took me to get the shortest boy hair cut with my ears cut out and all, the day before six grade ) I really havn't ever recovered. But Tracy worked her magic and I now had a fresh, healthy chic blonde lob! She requested I use this Davines shampoo and conditioner at home and I feel in love. My damaged hair took a u turn and felt more silky with every wash. Even after fall surfs and the harsh winter air this product always made my hair feel amazing. Around a year later my hair has grown back past my shoulders and feels still uber soft. I switch on and off using Davines because of the price but recently just purchased this 3 pack before my trip and couldn't be happier. I was more than psyched that shampoo and conditioner also came with their Absolute Beautifying Potion oil which gets rave reviews on every site. This oil is perfect for coating your hair before you head out into the surf or when you just get out of the shower ( a little goes a long way but never leaves you feeling greasy) You really can't put a price on good hair and good ingredients. This Mellow Natural Anti-Breakage Lustrous conditioner with apricot butter smells amazing and is a miracle product! I have always been one to use half of the bottle in one shower to feel like I am getting a good condition and with Davines a quarter sized amount really goes a long way! If you haven't tried this brand before I highly recommend it.
I received a sample of Beauty Protector's shampoo and conditioner in my monthly Birchbox last summer and was delightfully surprised at how well if worked. This brand is Paraben and sulfate free. Sulfates and harsh chemicals strip your hair of its natural oils which make hair frizzy and dull. They can also irritate your scalp. I have been using sulfate free products for a while now and have been on the search for a quality vegan hair care regimen for a couple of years. I have found a couple brands here and there that are okay but none that get everything right. Most vegan shampoo and conditioners make my hair feel clean and smell amazing but even after double deep conditioning my hair feels brittle and dry. This product team leaves my thin/wavy/frizzy hair clean/shiny/soft and smelling sooooooo amazing! Not only does my hair feel so soft but this product also adds volume and shape to my thin hair, which normally is unheard of after using a moisturizer that can get my ends feeling silky. After using every last drop in my sample, I researched and read tons of reviews about this best selling brand on Birchbox's website. Right before my trip I decided to take the plunge and spend a little extra on this amazing back of three hair care dream potions. I was very excited to try their protect and detangle leave in conditioner spray that was included in the package. Not only is this great smelling spray leave in conditioner, it is also a UV protector, color safe, and a heat protectant that adds shine and seals the cuticle. It was a wonderful surprise when $40 or so way taken off of my bill because I had racked up points for reviewing previous samples and getting a friend to join. Plus they email you tons of coupons! So I ended up getting the three package of Davines and the three pack of Beauty Protector for half price! If you haven't checked out Birchbox yet, what are you waiting for? Every month ten dollars is drafted out of your account and you are sent a wonderful surprise box of beauty goodies. I believe that this is a steal. I mean I would usually waste ten dollars on a so so lunch or a drink out at night and even though each month I know it's coming and I have paid for it, the beautiful Birchbox shows up in my mailbox and I feel like someone sent me a perfectly wrapped present. How sweet! Another positive to this monthly shipment is you get set up the box for what you are into. So I choose natural, vegan products, and tell them I have fine, wavy frizzy hair and I don't care about receiving a ton of perfume samples and boom! I get to try a large handful of large samples of new products and brands beauty gurus are raving about. The samples are great to take traveling or pop in your purse, I hate usually hate having full sized anything other than conditioner because I'm addicted. Oh yeah and I almost forgot the cute ladies from Birchbox email you videos to go along with the samples you get each month, showing you how to use them and giving you tons of make-up and hair tips! Click here to learn more about Birchbox.
I always try to each foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids and natural fats. What you eat truly affects you as a whole and eating a diet rich in greens filled with chlorophyl, fish, nuts, vegetables and fruits will keep your hair and skin feed with beautifying nutrients.
These are some of my favorite every day products. I love to use rose oil as a hair and face moisturizer. It just feels so fresh and lovely. I purchased Egyptian Magic at Whole Foods after reading tons of reviews and model testimonials on this miracle product. This all natural magic is antibacterial and fixes everything from burns, rashes, cuts, eczema, sunburn and more and a little goes a very long way. I use the coconut oil for everything from cooking to face moisturizer. I usually like to coat my hair in unrefined coconut oil before I shampoo if my hair feels extremely dry to load it with good fats and keep it from soaking up some of the harsh chemicals in our water that can dry your hair out. I also do a quick coating before I surf if it's feeling rather dry to keep it from getting to tangled. In the winter I love to use coconut oil as a face moisturizer or to add it in to a at home natural mask. This natural moisturizer leaves my face glowing and clean. I usually go make up free so this is great moisturizer to use when you are not layering on makeup. The coconut oil is great to cook with as well to help with your beautifying process. "Coconut oil is used extensively in tropical countries especially India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Philippines etc., which have a good production of coconut oil. At one time, the oil was also popular in western countries like the United States and Canada, but there was a strong propaganda campaign in the 1970s spread by the corn oil and soy oil industry against coconut oil. Coconut oil was considered harmful for the human body due to its high saturated fat content until the last decade (2000s) when people began to question the claims of the propaganda. The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, cholesterol level maintenance, weight loss, boosted immune system, proper digestion and regulated metabolism. It also provides relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and cancer, while helping to improve dental quality and bone strength. These benefits of oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and their respective properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal, antibacterial and soothing qualities.Coconut oil is used extensively in tropical countries especially India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Philippines etc., which have a good production of coconut oil. These are my beach bag musts! Healthy Sexy Hair's Soy Tri-Wheat Leave-In Conditioner was recommended to me from a surfer- girl friend with long wavy hair and it has been a heaven send. This product will get out any tangle the sea creates. I always cover my face in tons of sunscreen with helioplex. Below are some outfits any mermaid would daydream about. Wildfox's White Label Spring 2014 collection worn by pro surfer Hanalei Reponty. Let the swooning begin sea babies.

There are few swimsuit editorials as iconic as the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. Every year the world's sexiest swimsuit models are flown to amazing locations to shoot the hottest, barely-there bikinis. At the moment I am in Isabela, Puerto Rico and have yet to find a copy but I have complied my favorite old covers, classic pictures, and a ton of the 2014 pictures. from http://swimsuit.si.com . I have always been captivated by SI photos and it is only natural since I have been a bikini addict since I can remember . I grew up going to the beach with my gorgeous, sun-loving mother, who is my most favorite style icon. I would spend hours searching through pictures of her travels around the world in amazing bathing suits. I love photography and the way the photographers make each spread tell a story. I have included some old covers and photos which are my favorite part of this post. We have all heard the fashion comes around, but it's so fun to see trends from the past re-emerge and to see what beauty looks like from year to year.
My mom in 1963 at 2 years old rocking her new bikini.
The only other swimsuit photo of my mom I could find at the moment, but I plan to do a post of some of her pictures and travels soon; they are gorgeous .
Cherly Tiegs, 1983 Jamaica
The all time best cover in my opinion, manly because this suit is the suit of my dreams.
Elle Macpherson, 1988 Thailand
I couldn't be more thrilled high cuts and neoprene are back.
Elle Macpherson , 1986 Bora Bora
The header says it all " paradise found." The blue of this suit and the way it captures the light look like a reflection of the water. This suit was later recreated as a painted suit for Anne V.
Ashley Montana, 1991 Caicos
I have not seen this photo, nor had I heard of Ashley Montana before I started this post but this cover is one of my favorites and Ashley Montana is a pretty killer name. She looks like the perfect 90's barbie in all white and her sun hat.
Maria Joao, 1978 Bahia
Exotic beauty is hard to beat and I love that the sexy cut of this 70's suit is here again.
Jamee Becker, 1969
This cover blows my mind in the best way. Everything comes together to make this my new favorite cover of all time. Puerto Rico, surfer, color blocking, pom poms, belly chains, and arm bands. Yes I wish I could live in this photo.
Sunny Buppus, 1966 Norman Gay
Sunning on the beach is pure joy and I love how this picture captures that feeling. The classic 60's cut of this suit is so cute in red on a curvy little bombshell.
Tannia Ribiano, 1971
I am not sure of the location of this photo. SI is so iconic because they capture beauty from all over the world and show that beauty is not one standard image. Her curves, ease and confidence give this photo a very warm feeling.
Valeria Mazza and Tyra Banks, 1996 South Africa
This is a gorgeous picture where the suits almost look painted on. I am not sure if they are but I know this was inspiration for a later issues painted girls. Gold bangles rock!
Christie Brinkley, 1979 Seychelles
Okay, so Christie Brinkley still looks this hot and it's nuts. This suit is so sexy and the bead work on such a sheer fabric would make Brittney jealous.
Tyra Banks, 1997
Wow, she is hot in polka dots.
Marisa Miller, 2008 St. John
I remember buying this issue and then having a crazy obsession with Marisa Miller, but didn't everyone? I love how full crochet suits are popping up everywhere, I guess they never went out of style.
This cover needs no caption really because everyone is obsessed with the talented and insanely beautiful BEY.
I always flip to the body paint photo's first. I am amazed at what the artist come up with and how long it takes to make such a master piece. The models sometimes stand all night getting painted for an early shoot. It also requires quite a bit of confidence to stand and pose naked in front of the huge crew on the other side of the camera. The body paint spread adds another section of excitement to the issue, and I love how they pull from the past and re-image suits from previous issues. Below are some of my favorite body paint photos along with some of my favorite photos from past issues.
Heidi Klum making the most of a sweaty situation. The cut, tie die and colors of this one piece are so fun and sexy.
Jessica Hart, Mexico 2009. Top by Carmen Marc Volvo and bottoms by Depsi Swimwear.
Jessica Hart in this incredibly soft looking classic white bikini by SI alumni Tori Praver.
Jesscia Har, 2009
Unforgetable in Michael Kors
Noemie Lenoir, 2001shot by Terry Richardson.
The amazing Tori Praver in the Canary Islands in 2009. Top by Early Halloween NYC. Bottom by Debbie Wilson for Maui Girl.
I remember tearing these out and adding these to a collage. Anna Beatriz Barros, 2004.
Julie Henderson, 2008 Iseral. One of my favorite spreads. I love seeing photos of Iseral.
This Beach Bunny swimsuit is the perfect blue for Kate and looks painted on. Boracay Island, 2011.
This picture screams mermaid goddess. Suit by Anna Kosturova.
I love this photo is gorgeous without being overly sexy and kate looks unbelievable. Ha I remember using this in a collage for a binder in college.
2011, swimsuit by Missoni.
Marrisa Miller, 2004. Swimsuit by Rebequinha
Loved, loved, loved this spread of Tori Praver in her hometown of Maui. She is perfect. 2008.
Another view of Tori in Graceland. So sexy.
I love the athletes section. As a female athlete, being pictured in SI has got to be pretty insane. Not only are you a badass professional athlete, but your beating the typical stereotype that women who play sports competitively are manly and butch. Showing them that you can be strong, sexy and desirable. The past couple years have included female surfers such as Roxy's Bruna Schmitz and Rip Curl's Alana Blanchard but this year Anastasia Ashley graces the SI pages. With no big name sponsor this seductive ripper post instagram photos all day in every hot swim wear brand. She also seems to be kinda funny with her parody videos and pictures. If you haven't seen the bubble butt video, you should check it out on you tube. So she is pretty much naked in these photos and most of her instagram as well, but she looks super good, so hey why not. Go girl!

swimsuit by Mikoh and top by Aila Blue
Now back to the body painting. All the suits this year were amazing. I had to start out with my most favorite which is the flash on one piece recreated by Cali Dreaming Swimwear for the 50th edition of SI with inspiration from the Cherly Tiegs white one piece. Hannah Ferguson is flawlessly sexy and elegant in white mesh (which can be hard to do) but, wow!
Lauren Mellor looks striking in this inspired by Maui Girl by Debbie Wilson from the 1992 Monika Tilley swimsuit.
Cris Urena looks like a doll in the swimsuit inspired by the 1967 Rudi Grenreich suit which there is only one of and it is kept in a museum in New York. This suit had about 1,00o little squares and the gingham is so lady like. This suit is a fun way to have a bit of all the yellow gingham coming down runways.
Emily Ratajkowski in a painted recreation of Bar Rafaeli's guitar pick bathing suit from the music issue of SI. After painting little sparkle stones were added to make the chain.
Samantha Hoopes in a swim suit inspired by Wildfox swim for the 1989 Ipanema wear suit worn by Elle Macpherson.
It was very surprising that one of the locations this year was Cape May New Jersey. Every location for a SI shoot seems to be a remote tropical island. The top editor for SI swimsuit edition MJ May wanted to bring it back home and show how gorgeous New Jersey is even after the terrible disaster it has faced. I was overly excited to see that they were shooting in Cape May because it is the lovely little town that my boyfriend is from. It was a great idea to show the world that New Jersey is so beautiful. Before I visited Jersey with my boyfriend I had doubted it's natural beauty but was dumbfounded when I arrived. Cape May has pristine long sandy beaches, tons of marsh lands with ample wildlife, a charming downtown area with massive victorian homes and cobble stone roads, cute shops, history and the biggest hydrangeas you have ever seen. "As a lifelong New Jersey resident, I feel like I am always defending my quirky, beautiful state," Day says. "Hurricane Sandy hit and so many of my friends and family suffered from the destruction. It was devastating on a personal level for me. I thought, what better time to focus some attention on such a special area, overcoming some pretty incredible obstacles, than now, with the 50th anniversary of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue." - MJ Day http://www.nj.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2014/02/sports_illustrated_swimsuit_cover_model_nj.html .
I was also very excited to see Gigi Hadid as one of the rookies. She is insanely gorgeous. Well her whole family is and she seems to be so sweet. I obviously look at her instagram too much but she's great and I can't wait to see more from her. You may know her mom, Yolanda Foster a former model and now stars on The Real House Wives of Beverly Hills. This 19 year old Dutch and Palestinian model began working at 4 for Baby Guess and Guess kid and hopes to be a Victoria's Secret Angel one day. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4676882/
